Benefits and Risks of a Detox Cleanse

In today’s world, we eat a lot of junk and processed food. Those sorts of things can get some pretty gross junk in our systems that our body weeds out in order to make it continue to function properly. But what if our bodies aren’t doing the job?

There is one solution that many people have tried in order to try and get good results and to dump the junk out of our systems, and it’s called Detox Cleansing. Let’s take a look at it.

What is a Detox Cleanse?

In short, a detox diet is a regimen that focuses on how much you are eating, when you are eating, and how often you are eating. This change of pattern in your eating  results in getting get the toxins and other “junk” out of your system. There are a lot of people that swear by detox cleanses. The Master Cleanse is popular because it has been publicized by many celebrities.

There are a variety of detox cleanses out there, but most of them involve restrictions and adaptations of menus and eating habits that many people wouldn’t expect. Usually, there are periods of fasting followed by periods of strict diets which are difficult to master, usually raw vegetables, fruits, fruit juices, and water. Other detox diets involve using herbs, laxatives, and other supplements that encourage colon cleansing for the fullest cleanse possible. The Master Cleanse detox is a popular diet with excellent documented results.

Benefits of a Detox Cleanse

Detox cleanses do not, generally, have a lot of positivity associated with them. Many studies have shown that there is not much detoxing that needs to be done because the body already does it all for us. Now, of course, there are a variety of benefits and results that supporters of detox cleanses claim.

They remove toxins from the body. You get toxins from a variety of places. Over time, these build up and can really mess with your body’s functions. Cleansing your system can help your organs to become stronger and not have to work so hard.

Improved health. Overall, your health gets better. If you’re fasting on a regular basis, your body is staying clean and healthy internally.

Higher energy. The “gunk” in our systems makes our bodies feel heavy and can totally suck out our energy. If that gunk is out of our systems, then we’re better off and have better energy.

Decreased inflammation. Those toxins also make our body more likely to swell and be injured. Swollen joints and other pains involved with increased inflammation will go away once some of those toxins are eliminated.

Improved digestive function. If you’ve got something in your pipes in your home, it starts to make it harder for water to go through, right? That’s why we use pipe cleaners and such, to keep them clear so our sinks and toilets don’t clog. If you’re cleaning out your colon, it’s going to work a lot better than it did.

Weight Loss. An obvious benefit is the fact that you’ll be losing weight because you ingest less calories per week.

Your GI system gets a rest. We need rest for our bodies to work at peak performance, why shouldn’t our systems get a rest too?

Risks of a Detox Cleanse

Where there are benefits, there are also risks. This is how it is with almost any diet or exercise program. Let’s take a look at a few of them.

Potential “Placebo” effect. The human minds are tricky things. If we’re convinced that we’re doing a good thing, then we’re going to feel better. The scary part of this? We may be hurting our bodies without knowing it. The results are questionable.

Digestive abnormalities. If you increase fruit, vegetable and other fiber-heavy food consumption, you can become bloated and gassy, or you could have issues with diarrhea. Some people hypothesize that this is why it’s seen as a “cleanse” The master cleanse is a liquid detox, gas or diarrhea comes from the fluid.

Not getting the nutrients you need. Yikes! If you’re restricting food, you may not be getting the vital nutrients you need.

They aren’t a long-term solution. They aren’t meant for long term fix, they’re meant to kick start weight loss, nothing more.

Addictive personalities beware. You can get a “high” from the detox process, and it can become addictive, meaning that you may be in danger of an eating disorder.

Fatigue. I know, this seems opposite of the benefits, but if you aren’t being safe while trying to use a detox cleanse, you can get really, really wiped out.

Dehydration. For not getting enough liquid in you – remember, a lot of our daily water intake is from the food we eat. This is not really a result you get with the Master Cleanse as it is a liquid diet detox.

Should I consider a Detox Cleanse?

It depends, really. If you’re looking to try something new in order to  try and lose weight and feel better, then yes, a detox cleanse  like the Master Cleanse detox, may be for you.  It’s difficult to do, so for better results I recommend the book “Master Cleanse Secrets”.

If you already struggle with low blood pressure, low blood sugar, and other problems that could be exacerbated by a detox program that involves fasting, then you likely want to avoid it.

In general, if you desire to start any sort of weight loss and/or detox program, please consult with your doctor, trainer, or other medical professional first. They can help you make the best decision, no matter what your circumstance and body type. That’s what they’re there for, please utilize them.
